Abstract

The article discusses the role of the European Data Protection Supervisor in creating and interpreting legal regulations on the protection of personal data supplementing the General Data Protection Regulation. In the first part of the study, the European Data Protection Supervisor has been presented as the EU supervisory authority, four main fields of its activity have been indicated, and its tasks and powers have been presented. Farther on in the text, the legislative activity of the European Data Protection Supervisor and the legal nature of his opinions are discussed. The performed analyses have allowed for a conclusion that the European Data Protection Supervisor plays an important role in creating legal regulations on protection of personal data. However, it is worth noting that the competences of the European supervisory authority cover the scope of activities of EU institutions and bodies, but do not extend to the area of activity of domestic entities applying the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation, nor do they concern the supervision of national supervisory authorities.
