Abstract
The purpose of creating (in the 1970s) and functioning of the PESEL number has been to identify a natural person, and currently the use of this identifier in trading is widespread and constantly expanding. However, using this number to authenticate an individual is against its original purpose of creating and using a PESEL number (as an identifier). In turn, the understanding and acceptance of the proper purposes of using a PESEL number is needed to compare them with the conditions for personal data protection.

The basic de lege ferenda postulate is to standardize the systemic conditions for using the PESEL number (as an identifier) in trading, which is comprised in proper implementation of the requirements provided for in Art. 87 of the GDPR.
