Abstract
The purpose of the article is to analyze similarities and differences concerning the role of a data protection inspector (under Polish data protection law) and the role of a data protection officer (under the General Data Protection Regulation) with respect to appointment criteria, their status and tasks. While the status of a data protection inspector and a DPO is similar, there are significant differences with respect to some of their tasks. Under current Polish law, appointing a data protection inspector is optional, and under the Regulation it will be mandatory in certain cases.
