Abstract
The institution of lay judges in the Polish legal system implements the constitutionally guaranteed participation of citizens in the administration of justice which. Their status when judging is equal to the status of professional judges. The status of lay judges has not been yet the subject of any major discussions in the doctrine, given that the provisions defining their position in the legal system are quite precisely formulated. The recent amendments to the Act on the System of Common Courts have changed the aforementioned situation, especially with respect to disciplinary proceedings of judges and assessors, including participation of lay judges in these proceedings.
